(AP) ? CBS Corp. said Wednesday that net income rose 11 percent in the latest quarter, beating the expectations of analysts as the company continues to benefit from the types of fees that are at the center of a dispute with one of its key cable TV distributors.

Second-quarter net income grew to $472 million, or 76 cents per share. That's up from $427 million, or 65 cents per share, a year ago.

Revenue rose 11 percent to $3.7 billion.

Analysts polled by FactSet had expected 72 cents per share of earnings on revenue of $3.51 billion.

Shares increased 66 cents, or 1.3 percent, to $53.50 in after-hours trading.

The broadcaster benefited from licensing its shows to online streaming providers such as Netflix Inc. and from increasing the money it receives from cable and satellite TV distributors to retransmit CBS programming on customers' lineups. Analysts see such retransmission fees as key to CBS posting revenue and profit growth in the future. But such fees come at the expense of distributors, which are increasingly resisting.

A fight between CBS and one such distributor, Time Warner Cable Inc., continued Wednesday after a brief blackout of CBS stations to some cable customers after midnight on Monday. The companies have set a Friday deadline to reach a deal after a previous deal expired as the second quarter ended on June 30.

CBS CEO Leslie Moonves told investors on a conference call that the company remained resolute in its negotiations with Time Warner Cable. Time Warner Cable has resisted, saying CBS's demands would push up customer's monthly bills. But Moonves said he was confident a new deal would result in more money than it was receiving previously.

"Every deal we've made in the last two years has been an improvement from the one before," he said. "Our job is to continue to produce the content we're doing and getting paid for it."

Revenue from licensing deals is key to ensuring stability for CBS because advertising revenue ebbs and flows with the economy. The company said revenue from non-advertising sources grew to 43 percent of the total compared to less than 30 percent a few years ago.

Advertising revenue grew 5 percent in the quarter.

The company also highlighted the success of the TV show "Under the Dome," an unusual summer release that was made possible because it sold exclusive online rights to Amazon.com Inc.'s streaming video service. Episodes are available on Amazon four days after they broadcast on CBS.

Moonves said the show, based on the novel by Stephen King, cost more than $3 million per episode, but it was profitable even before it aired because of Amazon's participation and international sales.

Advertising sales based on the more than 10 million viewers each week are "gravy" that will bring in profits in the third quarter, Moonves said.

Moonves said other networks would likely try to copy the model. He said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos "actually spoke to me personally about how pleased they were that they experimented with this."

Obama honors NCAA champions UConn women

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama honored the University of Connecticut women's basketball team Wednesday, calling its players incredible athletes, outstanding women, and role models on and off the court.

Obama welcomed the Huskies at a White House ceremony commemorating their eighth NCAA championship. In April the Huskies defeated Louisville 93-60 in the tournament final.

Obama joked that Coach Geno Auriemma "spends more time than some presidents" at the executive mansion. Auriemma quipped that "it doesn't get old" as he and the team presented Obama with an autographed basketball and jacket.

Obama said the Huskies won for being at their best when the stakes were high. He singled out Breanna Stewart, who was named most outstanding player of the Final Four.

The president also highlighted the team's community service, such as visiting seriously ill children at the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and joining in the Walk for Autism.

The president said he was especially proud of the players for being role models to his daughters Sasha, 12, and Malia. 15.

"As the father of two young, beautiful, athletic and tall daughters, it just always puts a smile on my face whenever I see such class acts represent their school and their country so well," he said.

ASUS eyeing 2014 for US smartphone launch

It wouldn't be the first time ASUS saw a US smartphone launch -- though last time the company had the GPS experts at Garmin to help it find its way. This time, according to Jonney Shih, the maker of both the Padfone and Fonepad (coincidence?) is looking to take a more direct route. The ASUS chairman told All Things D that his company has been making progress building bridges with retailers and carriers alike in an attempt to succeed in the already crowded US market. And while it may not be impossible, a 2013 launch is looking unlikely. "I think next year is more reasonable," he told the site.

Monroe Union County Economic Development will market three areas of Union County to build jobs and investment.

Monroe and Union County economic development officials want to market three distinct areas of the county for new business and industry, according to a plan approved by the Union Board of County Commissioners.

?It?s really a three-layer cake,? says Chris Plat?, executive director of Monroe Union County Economic Development. ?It?s almost impossible to market Union County as a unit.?

Those three regions of the county will be branded under Gateway Union County, Monroe Aero and Grow Union County to take advantage of the county?s three strengths, Plat? says.

County commissioners approved the two-year economic-development plan last week.

During the next 48 months, Plat? and his staff will target precision manufacturing, logistics, agri-business and commercial development in an effort to build the county's job base. In addition, businesses already in those sectors will be highlighted for job retention.

This year, Plat? formed a joint city-county economic development agency, replacing the efforts of Union County Partnership for Progress. Both the city and county contribute to Monroe Union County Economic Development.

Israel OK's prisoner release, step to peace talks

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A divided Israeli Cabinet agreed Sunday to release 104 long-term Palestinian prisoners convicted of deadly attacks, clearing a hurdle toward resuming Mideast peace talks and giving U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry his first concrete achievement after months of shuttle diplomacy.

Despite the decision, a return to negotiations after a five-year break is not yet assured. Also, release of the prisoners is linked to progress in the talks, meaning many could well remain behind bars.

Neither side is upbeat. Each blames the other for the lack of success in 20 years of negotiations, and Kerry's success so far has been only to get the parties back to the table.

The prisoner release, approved 13-7 with two abstentions, is a key part of the Kerry-brokered deal. Next, Israeli and Palestinian teams are expected to meet in Washington on Tuesday to prepare for six to nine months of negotiations on setting up a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, seeking to overcome stiff opposition from ultra-nationalists, told his Cabinet that "resuming the political process at this time is important for Israel," noting that any deal would be submitted to a national referendum.

The chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, welcomed the vote on the prisoners as a "step toward peace," one he said is long overdue.

Negotiators made progress in previous rounds, and the outlines of a deal have emerged ? a Palestinian state in most of the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, lands captured by Israel in 1967, with border adjustments to enable Israel to annex land with a majority of nearly 600,000 settlers.

Those negotiations broke down before the sides could tackle the most explosive issues, a partition of Jerusalem and the fate of Palestinian refugees and their descendants, now several million people.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas remains leery of negotiating with Netanyahu, fearing any offer made by the hard-liner would fall far short of Palestinian demands, so he has insisted on a clear framework for negotiations.

Abbas said over the weekend that Kerry assured him the invitation to the negotiators will say border talks are based on the 1967 line ? though Netanyahu has not said whether he has dropped his long-standing opposition to that demand.

In Washington, the Israeli and Palestinian teams are supposed to close the remaining gaps on the framework for talks, and they could well falter at that early point.

Israel's release of veteran prisoners could help Abbas persuade a skeptical Palestinian public that it's worthwhile returning to negotiations.

Netanyahu has repeatedly called for a resumption of negotiations that broke down in 2008, but he has not sketched the outlines of a deal he would be willing to strike, except to say he opposes a partition of Jerusalem.

In Sunday's Cabinet meeting, he pushed through the prisoner release despite opposition by two ministers in his Likud Party and by those from a main coalition partner, the pro-settler Jewish Home Party.

Outside the government complex, hundreds protested against a release. Among them were families of Israelis killed in attacks by Palestinian militants. Some held up pictures of their loved ones.

Naftali Bennett, the head of Jewish Home, briefly joined the protesters before attending the Cabinet meeting. "It's a hard day, the decision was made and I hope we won't pay a horrible price for this in the future," he said after the vote.

In the West Bank and Gaza, some relatives of prisoners anxiously awaited word. "Now there is a big relief," said Walid Abu Muhsen, 45, whose brother Jamal has been in prison for the past 22 years for killing an Israeli farmer.

The first disagreements emerged just hours after the Cabinet vote, reflecting the hostility and deep mistrust between the two sides.

Under the deal brokered by Kerry, Israel is supposed to free 104 prisoners who carried out attacks before the first interim peace agreements of the early 1990s.

Palestinian negotiators handed Kerry a list of 104 prisoners, arrested between 1983 and 1994. They said Kerry assured them Israel would release the prisoners in four stages over several months, with each release linked to progress in negotiations.

Among the 104 prisoners on the Palestinian list are two dozen who either have Israeli citizenship or come from Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem. In the past, Israeli media have said Israel would not free them.

On Sunday evening, an official in Netanyahu's office said that no Israeli Arabs are among the 104 whose release was authorized by the Cabinet. Asked to explain the discrepancy, he said Israel holds more than 104 "pre-Oslo" prisoners, suggesting the two sides apply different definitions.

Issa Qarakeh, the Palestinian minister of prisoner affairs, responded angrily.

"The agreement with Kerry was that all the pre-Oslo prisoners, including Israeli Arabs and east Jerusalem residents, will be released," he said. "If they (Israelis) exclude any of them, there will be a problem that might hinder the talks."

Israeli analyst Yossi Alpher said that a prisoner release in stages gives Netanyahu additional leverage during negotiations.

"Netanyahu has given himself a carrot that he can hold out to the Palestinians," he said. "Netanyahu can refuse to release the later batches if there's no progress."

SLIDESHOW: Apple's 12-Inch iPad, Google's New Nexus 7 and More From the Fourth Week of July

As July comes to a close, investors may notice that it appears to be ending in a very familiar way: with Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) reigning supreme.

Both tech giants made a ton of headlines this week, particularly in the area of new products. Apple has yet to unveil anything new, but rumors continued to state that new iPads and iPhones are just around the corner.

Google unveiled two new products this week -- Chromecast and the second-generation Nexus 7. The former is already a huge success.

Google Unveiled the New Nexus 7

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) flexed its tablet muscles this week when it unveiled the long-awaited Nexus 7 upgrade.

The second-generation model comes with the highest-resolution display of any seven-inch tablet.

It also carries a $229 MSRP -- $30 more than the original Nexus 7.

Apple Set a New iPhone Sales Record?

Analysts thought that iPhone sales were about to tank. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) proved them wrong.

The Cupertino, California-based tech giant sold 31.2 million units during the fiscal 2013 third quarter.

This set a new record for iPhone sales during the April-June sales period.

?But Mac and iPad Sales Declined

Not every product in Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) portfolio has proved to be successful.

In fact, with the sole exception of the iPhone, the company experienced very little success.

Apple tried to downplay the fact that domestic Mac sales declined 12 percent in June. Worldwide, Mac sales declined five percent during the June quarter.

Apple sold 14.6 million iPads versus 17 million in the year-ago period and 19.5 million in the previous quarter.

Google Made Everyone Forget About Nexus Q

Remember that ball-shaped, audio-only streaming device that Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) introduced last year?

It was known as the Nexus Q. Some might say that the "Q" stood for "questionable" product, especially since the device was never released.

Google made up for that this week when it introduced Chromecast, an inexpensive streaming device that works with most smartphones and tablets.

Chromecast sold out almost immediately, thanks in part to the $35 price tag.

  • 12-Inch iPad Surfaced

When Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) unveiled the 128GB version of the fourth-generation iPad, artists rejoiced.

This week, after rumors claimed that Apple is experimenting with an iPad measuring just under 13 inches, artists became very intrigued by the possibilities.

While a 12-inch tablet may be too heavy and too large for the average user, artists could use it to enhance their creations and show off their portfolios.

Tim Cook Didn't Confirm a Cheap iPhone, But Analysts Want One Anyway

There was some confusion this week regarding what Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) CEO Tim Cook said during the company's earnings call.

He didn't actually confirm the existence of a low-cost iPhone.

Nonetheless, analysts continued to speculate about this illusive product, which they are convinced Apple will release later this year.

iPad 5 Expected to be Thinner and Lighter

In news that is exciting but far from shocking, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is reportedly working on a next-generation iPad that is thinner and lighter than the last.

Oddly, rumors have yet to suggest that the fifth-generation iPad will have improved battery life.

Rumors insisted that a better battery would come to the iPad 3 and iPad 4, but that never came to pass.

And yet now, after the MacBook Air (which is a greater power hog than an iPad) received an energy bump, the rumor mill goes silent for the iPad 5.

Sony (NYSE: SNE) is no longer the only firm that will allow independent developers to self-publish.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) will now do the same for Xbox One.

There's just one catch: this feature is unlikely to be available at launch.

Apple Serves One Billion Podcast Subscriptions

Aside from the mixed earnings (which saw record-breaking iPhone sales and declining iPad, Mac and iPod results), Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) had a terrific week.

The company quietly announced that iTunes had reached one billion podcast subscriptions.

Now that podcasts, apps and music downloads have crossed the one billion mark, Apple might begin to count down until its billionth video has been downloaded.

Metro Sport?s London 2012 Olympics: The best bits ? part one

Metro Sport's London 2012 Olympics: The best bits - part one
The London 2012 opening ceremony took place exactly a year ago (Picture: PA)

Almost unbelievably, it has been a whole year to the day since the opening ceremony at Stratford?s Olympic Stadium and the start of London 2012.

After sitting down pondering where the time goes, Metro?s sport reporters put our heads together to pick out our favourite moments from an incredible summer of sport in the capital.

From the more obvious to some of the forgotten moments, here is the first of two installments recapping the best bits from 12 months ago.

Don?t forget to let us know your London 2012 highlights ? whether you were a spectator at an event, jumping up and down in front of the television or even one of the tens of thousands of incredible Games Makers, we want to hear your memories.

Metro Sport's London 2012 Olympics: The best bits - part one
Jessica Ennis got off to the perfect start in the heptathlon (Picture: Reuters)

Dave Gurney

?Early on the first day of the athletics programme, something special happened. As a demonstration of the excitement generated by the Games for those watching, and of a competitor rising to the greatest of occasions, it would be hard to beat.

?The roar that greeted the name ?Jessica Ennis? being announced as she lined up for the 100metres hurdles was deafening, as a packed house ? for a morning athletics session at an Olympics, this in itself was close to unprecedented ? showed just what the heptathlon star and London 2012 meant to them.

?The expectation surrounding the Briton was extraordinary. She shouldered the incredible burden of being the face of a home Games and the firmest of favourites to win. Who could cope with that kind of pressure?

?As it turned out, Ennis could. She put down an emphatic marker that morning, a devastating statement of intent, as she stormed home in 12.54 seconds ? a time that shattered the British hurdles record, and would have been good enough to win gold in the individual event at the Beijing Games.

?There may have been the best part of two days of competition to go but anyone who witnessed Ennis that day knew it was already over.?

The men?s cycling road race was disappointing for Team GB but a great spectacle (Picture: Getty)

Nick Metcalfe

?I have so many wonderful memories of the London Games, but the most bizarre probably came on the opening Saturday when I found myself on the main road running through West Byfleet watching the men?s road race cyclists, Mark Cavendish and all, in action.

?I never thought I?d be seeing sport?s greatest show in the Surrey village in which I grew up.

?I couldn?t help but think of where I was for my second live event at the Beijing Games four years earlier, in Tiananmen Square for the women?s marathon.

?Somehow, standing near the big Waitrose in the middle of West Byfleet didn?t have quite the same iconic feel.?

Metro Sport's London 2012 Olympics: The best bits - part one
The ?Queen? parachuted into the Olympic opening ceremony (Picture: Getty)

Hannah Duncan

?Four words ? ?Good evening Mr Bond.?

?What a way to kick start a scintillating two weeks of sport in a (mostly) gloriously sunny London, with unprecedented success for Team GB.

?We all watched the Opening Ceremony in awe. Maybe, despite the security farce and typically British worries, we might ? might ? just pull this one off. And it all started on that first night at the Olympic Stadium.

?As the cameras dodged the corgis and zoomed in on the back of Her Majesty, few watching would believe it actually would be the Queen on screen as she turned round to address Daniel Craig. But those four simple words proved to be one of the best moments of 2012 British television, (sadly, she didn?t really jump out of the helicopter).

?And sure there were many spectacular sporting moments last summer, all of which would eclipse the Queen?s moment in the spotlight, not least two of my favourites ? Gemma Gibbons? tearful ?I love you mum? as she reached the judo final and Jade Jones? stunning success in the taekwondo. But ?Good evening Mr Bond? certainly set the tone for the brilliant two weeks ahead.?

Metro Sport's London 2012 Olympics: The best bits - part one
Chad Le Clos (left) stunned MIchael Phelps in the pool (Picture: Reuters)

Massimo Marioni

?The world waited with baited breath as Michael Phelps stood on the verge of Olympic history.

?The American was two medals away from becoming the most decorated athlete ever, but a relatively unheralded 20-year-old from South Africa was here to spoil the party.

?With Phelps having won the previous two gold medals in the 200m butterfly, the 27-year-old was odds-on favourite to claim another, and add a record-equalling 18th Olympic honour to his bulging trophy cabinet.

?It looked like another walk in the park until Chad Le Clos powered up from behind to touch the wall in one minute 52.96 seconds, just 0.05secs ahead of Phelps.

?The emotion on the youngster?s face, having just beaten his hero and the best swimmer of all time to Olympic gold, was one to truly savour ? and his dad?s post-race interview, absolutely overcome and beaming with pride, brought a tear to the eye and highlighted every glorious about the London Games.?

Metro Sport's London 2012 Olympics: The best bits - part one
Mo Farah stole the show on the track (Picture: Reuters)

Dave Filmer

?More than the sight of Mo Farah kicking his way to 5,000metres glory, I?ll always remember the noise.

?The wall of sound which greeted him as he added a second gold after his 10,000m triumph was incredible ? just thinking about that night makes the hairs on the back of my neck tingle.

?For as long as I live, I?ll remember the noise, the elation and ? later ? watching our man Mo trading celebrations with sprint god Usain Bolt. I?m under no illusions as to how lucky I was to be there on the final night of athletics.

?I?ve also vivid memories of being one of 80,000 people happily doing the Mobot at a Blur gig in Hyde Park 24 hours later which somehow seemed a perfectly fitting climax to a sensational Games.?

Metro Sport's London 2012 Olympics: The best bits - part one
Ruben Limardo showed off his gold medal on the London Underground (Picture: Getty)

Jamie Sanderson

?One of the key qualities the Olympians showed at London 2012 was their humility. While cocky footballers scoop barrel loads of cash for doing little, the stars of the Games showed class and dignity while claiming super human achievements.

?Few summed it up better than Venezuelan?Ruben Limardo, who took gold in the fencing. The little known star didn?t celebrate with an extravagant celebration or a parade ? instead he calmly took his gold back to the Olympic village on the tube, much to the delight of commuters. Class act.?
