Wildfires rage in Calif., New Mexico

>>> we do want to begin with breaking news, wildfires surging in california and new mexico. diane on the fire line with the latest on what's happening. what's happening?

>> reporter: this powerhouse fire is becoming a huge problem, it's 19,500 acres consumed and five structures and currently threatening about 1,000 people. this is a huge fire, raging since sunday afternoon and we've been covering it since then. it continues to grow. they are having a lot of trouble containing it. it was only 15% contained so far because we're in the midst of steep, rugged terrain. we're talking about ground crews using bulldozers, cutting fire lines around the fire to contain the flame. it's taking a lot of time and a lot of effort to do that. at this point the flames are still continuing to grow. we're also having air drops, not right now because it's a little too dark for that. doing air drops, it's complicated by windy conditions that are not allowing them to target hot spots that flair up and continue to make problems for firefighters. there's another big fire we're all keeping an eye on and that's in new mexico. that is burning 25 miles outside of santa fe . this fire is filling the air with a lot of black smoke , a lot of problems for firefighters. we're keeping an eye on those. we'll have an update for you as soon as we have one. lester.
