In Home Personal Care: How Far are you willing ... - Elder Care Cafe

One of the most difficult tasks of a family caregiver is when the parent needs personal care. Very few adult children are able or willing to perform the intimate tasks of personal hygiene that will keep their parent clean and healthy. Most of us know how a shower or bath and a clean change of clothes can perk up our attitude and give us a feeling of mental wellbeing. The same good feeling happens when our parent is clean as well.

As people age, they often find it difficult or even impossible to take a bath or shower especially on a daily basis. It also becomes difficult to reach the areas of the body that need to be washed. It can also be difficult to get dressed afterwards. They may be suffering from arthritis or the numerous aches and pains in the joints that many aging seniors must endure. Even the act of getting dressed eventually becomes too difficult.

Adult children find it very difficult to have to see their mother or father naked, let along wash and dry their body and help them get dressed. It can be embarrassing to both the senior and their daughter or son.

One way you can deal with this situation is to remove clothing from their body one area at a time. Wash that area, or help them if they are still able to move their arm or hand, and then dry and cover that are before moving on the next. ? If they have a walk in shower, you can place a bench within the shower and use a handheld shower device to help them wash their body, especially in hard to reach areas. They can often wash their own face, hands and arms.

While you have them in the shower, this is a good time to help them wash their hair and brush their teeth. Trying to brush their teeth standing at a sink can be painful and awkward for them.

If your parent is bedridden, you will have to sponge bathe them using a dishpan of water. Again, you can wash one area at a time leaving the rest of their body covered in order to keep embarrassment at bay.

While active people usually bathe on a daily basis, inactive seniors can go a day or two before they need a full bath. A daily washing or hands, face, and private areas should be adequate in most cases.

Because I am caring for my father, I?ve been able to get help from a local home care agency. We call them Dads? shower gals. Currently they are coming in twice a week ? Monday and Friday ? and giving him a full shower and getting him redressed in clean clothes. What is cool about this agency is that they also clean his bathroom and bedroom and take out the trash. They would clean the whole house if we wanted to pay for that, but I?m able to take care of the rest.

I?ve said right from the start that I do not want to touch my father any more than necessary and I have been sticking to that. There are ways you can get help if you feel the same way about your parent. It?s actually not that expensive considering the alternative.

The other plus for us at this time is that since we joined the PACE program, the in-home care is at no cost to us. You should check on whether such a program is available in your community. It?s a state-wide initiative that helps seniors and their caregivers physically and financially.

Video: Bikers shutdown 10 Freeway in West Covina for wedding proposal

LOS ANGELES - California Highway Patrol officials say a stunt where bikers blocked traffic on Interstate 10 east of Los Angeles for a marriage proposal may result in serious charges, and numerous traffic citations have already been issued.

Officer Vince Ramirez said Tuesday that investigators will now determine if the proposal resulted in violations worthy of felonies, such as accidents that may have caused injuries.

In videos posted to YouTube, hundreds of motorcyclists block four lanes of traffic and an off-ramp Sunday afternoon while the would-be groom burns out a "smoke bomb" tire that lets off a huge plume of pink smoke.

A man wearing a leather vests with the Subliminal 710 Bikerz insignia then got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend before the bikers rode away.

Hipmunk Flight & Hotel Search (for iPad)

In a plentiful sea of flight and hotel search engines, Hipmunk stands out for having a few special features that make it easy to find a flight that will be comfortable for you, and accommodations that also fit your needs?even if you can't find them in a standard hotel. Hipmunk's iPad app, called Hipmunk Flight & Hotel Search (free), delivers the same great experience on the iPad. Visually, it works very well, showing color-coded flight options by carrier, making it easy to see layover locations and duration. The app even provides slider bars for narrowing down what time you want to travel. Its hotel search has a few additional neat visual features and, best of all, it includes listing from Airbnb and HomeAway in its results.

This search aggregator doesn't quite tick all the boxes, though, and it's important to note that it's a search app, not a booking app. Hipmunk will send you off to an airline's website or even?Orbitz when you're ready to put down your credit card details. It's similar in that respect to Google Flights, and equally as handy for search.

Special Features: Flights
When I saw the initial landing page of Hipmunk's iPad app, I worried that it would not effectively use the screen's real estate, as you'll see a cramped box in the upper left corner for filling in your search criteria. But it's just this first screen that doesn't use the iPad's full space, and in fact, the layout and visual nature of Hipmunk on all its following pages is excellent.

All the basic search options are included, such as type-ahead search for airport codes, number of passengers, and whether you prefer to fly coach, business, or first class. Hipmunk searches both internationally and domestically. You won't find any selections for fine tuning which airports you prefer, like being able to say "all New York City airports except EWR," for example, as you can in Kayak's iPad app. Flexible dates are also out both here and on Hipmunk's full web site, so stick to Editors' Choice Orbitz (website version) for that feature.

The results appear quickly and are color coded by airline. In the slideshow, you can see just how easy it is to find a flight that fits all your needs. Hipmunk lets you sort the results by price, flight duration, and its signature default category "agony"?in other words, the least painful flight considering all the variables.

Sliders at the top of the page let you quickly narrow down your search based on departure or arrival time.? Flights that have Wi-Fi on board include a Wi-Fi icon right on the results matrix. It's all extremely intuitive to use and takes advantage of the iPad's touch capabilities very well.

My favorite feature, however, is one that's so simple I can't believe other flight search apps don't use it: tabs! Hipmunk's iPad app lets you have multiple search results open at any given time. Tabs also make it easy to switch between the results you've found for comparative shopping.

Special Features: Hotels
Hotel search results also use neat visual displays to make it easy to sort through the options. A map view shows cool features and different facets of the neighborhood where you might stay, like whether it is pedestrian-friendly (hilly San Francisco is a dream to navigate with this feature enabled) and whether there's nightlife nearby by showing heat maps of hot spots, if you'll forgive the pun.

As mentioned, the hotel results include listings from Airbnb and HomeAway, two online services that let individuals rent out their houses and apartments. When you need a room in a very specific location or at a flexible price, these two services can really open up your options, and it's a god-send that Hipmunk includes them.

TripAdvisor and Airbnb ratings are included in the hotel results as well, giving you yet other metrics on which to judge the decency of a particular place to sleep.

Connected Traveler

Booking
As with Bing Travel and Google Flights, Hipmunk sends you to a merchant site once you're ready to make a reservation. The benefit is that you get the best possible price; the compromise is that there's no pricing guarantee from Hipmunk (there may be at the point of sale, though, depending on where you go to book). Hipmunk will send you to an airline website directly, or Orbitz, or Airbnb?wherever has the best price.

Price, Priorities, and the iPad
Especially when on the road with an iPad, Hipmunk Flight & Hotel Search can help you find the right air travel itinerary or accommodation quickly and efficiently. It doesn't have quite the same granularity for filtering as Kayak or Orbitz, but it's simple to use and can get the job done quickly and efficiently if you're not too picky about airports and know precisely which days you need to travel.

Althouse: "At-Home Dads Make Parenting More of a 'Guy' Thing."

From the Wall Street Journal:
At-home dads... take pride in letting their children take more risks on the playground, compared with their spouses. They tend to jettison daily routines in favor of spontaneous adventures with the kids. And many use technology or DIY skills to squeeze household budgets, or find shortcuts through projects and chores, says the study, based on interviews, observation of father-child outings and an analysis of thousands of pages of at-home dads' blogs and online commentary.

"Just as we saw a feminization of the workplace in the past few decades, with more emphasis on such skills as empathy and listening, we are seeing the opposite at home?a masculinization of domestic tasks and routines," says Gokcen Coskuner-Balli, an assistant professor of marketing at Chapman University in Orange, Calif., and lead author of the study. "Many men are building this alternative model of home life that is outdoorsy, playful and more technology-oriented."

Cardinal Health restructuring to cost 180 jobs, including 20 in Dublin

Cardinal Health is restructuring a medical supply unit, resulting in some job losses.

Cardinal Health Inc. said Wednesday it plans to cut about 180 jobs, including 20 at its Dublin headquarters, and take a pre-tax charge of $79 million as it restructures a unit in its medical supply division.

The moves are meant to anticipate customer demand for greater efficiency and lower cost, spokeswoman Debbie Mitchell said in an email to Columbus Business First.

The pharmaceutical and supply distributor outlined the costs in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, saying the charges will come from employee separations and an expected loss on selling real estate at its campus in Waukegan, Ill.

The company is closing the Chicago-area facility that assembles surgical kits, which are sterilized packages with instruments used in specific surgical procedures, and moving production to the two other facilities that make the kits in Fort Mill, S.C., and Juarez, Mexico. The Waukegan facility employs about 650, but the net job loss to Cardinal will be about 100 as positions transfer to the other two sites, Mitchell said.

Cardinal moved 700 jobs from Waukegan to Dublin five years ago. Mitchell said the company will keep two buildings on its McGaw Park campus there, while selling the rest.

The other reduction of 80 jobs comes from consolidating nationwide medical supply sales and marketing teams that serve hospitals.

Separately, Cardinal is planning to sell a business in El Paso, Texas, that sterilizes instruments. Mitchell said the plan is to lower Cardinal?s costs by having another operator take on that business and its employees and sell the service back to Cardinal.

The company expects the restructuring to be complete by the end of the year ending June 30, 2014, and for savings to start accruing before then.

HTC to hold press events on February 19th, will show off 'what's next'

It looks like some of the hottest MWC action won't take place in the same country -- or even in the same week, for that matter. HTC has confirmed that it will be holding a press event in New York on the 19th of February, which is a few days before the majority of MWC companies hold their press conferences. At the time of this post, we believe this will be the company's new flagship phone (currently rumored to be called the M7). We've also received official confirmation that an event will be held in London as well. Regardless of where they're held, we'll be there to get you the info on the latest and greatest from HTC!

The Perfect Mix ? thedishbytrish

Hi friends! How was your weekend?! I hope it was great! Mine was the perfect mix of work and play, with a little bit of relaxation to boot.

To be perfectly honest, my whole week was a pretty great mix of all of those things too. In the restaurant industry, we don?t really get what you call a ?traditional schedule?. I do get to work more day shifts now that I?ve?transitioned from serving and bartending to full-time management and event planning, but weekends and holidays are still work days for me. On the positive side of things, I get random weekdays off to take advantage of less-crowded stores, take care of normal business hours errands (bank, post office, etc.), and well, sleep in and lounge around while the rest of you are at work. And let me tell you, staying in bed for FIVE HOURS after my husband leaves for work on a random Tuesday doesn?t suck.

Also, working weekends means the case of the Mondays isn?t nearly as bad as it is for most people. Whether you?ve been working all weekend or not, Monday is still a bit of a downer, but not nearly as bad as it could be.

5 days

This past week I was off Wednesday and I was lucky enough to see my parents! My dad actually had an eye surgery here in town so I waited with my mom while he was under the knife, then hung out with them in recovery until he was ready to go home. Hoping to get to spend some quality time with them soon, preferrably not in a hospital. ;)

I had plans to meet up with friends for lunch at Marigold Kitchen afterwards, but a miscommunication of time meant I sat and waited for about 40 minutes until I decided to get a salad to go. I knew I?d like this place from the moment I walked in, I?m a sucker for any place with chalkboard signs and menus.

20130123_130352

Marigold specializes in creative, healthy food and I?m told their breakfast is simply the best. My salad was pretty good, even if I had to skip the toasted rustic bread and champagne vinaigrette in order to stick with the program. I was left with arugula, frisee, pine nuts, oven roasted cherry tomatoes, roasted chicken, and black currants that were pretty much undetectable. Each staff member that I encountered at Marigold was absolutely, positively, incredibly friendly. They definitely made me feel welcome while I waited and waited. I will for sure go back some day soon!

I worked Thursday and then lucked out with a whole Friday off too. It was Restaurant Week again so we met up with friends for dinner at Eldorado Grill. As it turned out, celebrating was in order as one of the couples got engaged on earlier that day!

So for that reason, as well as celebrating my ten pound weight loss, I had a margarita! I know, I know, never celebrate weight loss with food/drink. Psshh, food and drink is pretty much my favorite thing ever. That?s just how I celebrate and always will. One night of indulgence just means getting back on the wagon the next day.

I tried to be as smart as possible and went with the ?Tito-rita?. Handmade Vodka on the rocks with a splash of Patron Citronage and fresh lime. Lower sugar and lower calorie than your regular ol? marg, that?s for sure. You see those chips hanging out by my ?rita? Yeah? Don?t they look good?
20130125_200513

You know who has two thumbs and didn?t touch a damn chip? Yep, this girl right here. You guys. You have no idea how difficult this was for me or how proud I was of myself for not eating them. I usually make a meal out of chips and salsa alone when I?m at a Mexican restaurant. And then proceed to eat an entire meal, of course?

In case you don?t recall, each restaurant participating in Restaurant Week offers a special three-course menu for $25. You get your choice of three items for each course. I started with Texas Torpedoes (which I totally forgot to photograph): Pickled jalape?o peppers stuffed with shrimp and Monterey Jack cheese, wrapped with smoked bacon and grilled to perfection. Served with pico de gallo, sour cream, and fresh lime. AKA, my first dairy in nearly three weeks! So SO good.

My main course was the Seasonal Vegetable and Quinoa Stuffed Poblano Chile.
20130125_203840
A smoked poblano pepper filled with garlic infused quinoa and roasted seasonal vegetables. Served over salsa Nortena and garnished with guacamole and queso fresco. I hardly touched the rice, and since there wasn?t much queso fresco IN the chile, I hardly broke the rules on this one!

And for dessert (which is also when I finally turned on my flash):
Spicy Chocolate Strawberries
20130125_210650
Fresh strawberries dipped in chile-infused dark chocolate served alongside an agave and red chile infused tequila taster. Let?s see, what?s the positive in this? At least it was fruit? This was definitely the most diet friendly of the options, as the others all included either ice cream or custard in the form of key lime pie.

Such a great meal! I only felt the tiniest bit guilty about breaking my diet rules. But you know what? You gotta live a little, even when following a program.

We stopped for one more drink on the way home to celebrate the engagement (I had water). The bar of choice was Le Tigre Lounge. I can?t even find words to explain this place. Tigers. Everywhere. It also hasn?t been updated since the 1970s, smells a bit like an ?adult novelty store?, and doesn?t accept credit or debit. I took a few photos myself, but it?s so dang dark in there none of them turned out. So Google helped me find a couple.
le tigre

bookfest-20121
This place is a freakin? hoot. But don?t get caught saying anything worse than freakin?. Says on the door ?NO SWEARING? and they mean it. People legit get kicked out for swearing. In a bar. Love it! We stop in every few months or so and it NEVER changes. I hope it never will!

When I got home, I had a major mirror sesh. You know, checking out your eyebrows, picking at your pores, etc. Don?t tell me you?ve never done it. I?m so torn. I actually love my hair right now. It sort of created it?s own ombre (AKA outgrowth, which people pay good money to cover up), and it?s longer than I?ve had it in years. Maybe ever. But the ends are pretty ugly and I?m obsessing over photos of how dark my hair was last winter. What?s a girl to do?! Here?s a side by side. What do you think?
hair
Go darker? Shorter? I asked my Instagram friends and there was a unanimous ?DON?T CUT IT!!!?, but I didn?t ask about color. The photo collage on Instagram shows the ombre-ish-ness (totally a word) a bit better too.

I worked 8-5 both Saturday and Sunday, and we met up with friends again Saturday night. After work tonight, the hubs and I went grocery shopping and then recreated the Texas Torpedoes we had at dinner on Friday night. Yeah, that means I had more dairy. And turkey bacon. Oops. It was worth it.

I also threw together some brown rice, shrimp, and Rotel. I ate my torpedoes + shrimp and rice over spinach with some avocado. Sooooo yummy!

20130127_192155

Hubby is going strong on Insanity workout and has now decided to try to eat a bit healthier too. We have some healthy meals planned for the next few days and he?s even showing a bit of interest in the AdvoCare products I?m taking. He thinks he might try a Meal Replacement Shake tomorrow, as his breakfast normally consists of a Nature Valley granola bar, leaving him famished an hour later due to the high sugar/low protein ratio in those bars.

I?m trying to explain to him that AdvoCare is not necessarily for weight loss, but for energy and performance enhancement too. I think he?s finally opening up to the idea that these products could help him a little bit too.

I?ll leave you with one last thing. A co-worker of mine is going through some tough stuff right now. His dad is in poor health and his family had to make some decisions over the weekend that are just not fair. He?s missed a few shifts and will continue to, as being with his family is of utmost importance right now. A few of my other co-workers decided to take up a collection for our friend so that he can continue to spend time with his family without stressing too much about missing work. In one night, they collected $258 from co-workers. I found this in the safe this morning at work and my heart melted a little bit as my eyes filled with tears.

20130127_081418

I am surrounded by so many great people.

Have a great week, blends. Speaking of, are any of you going to The Blend Retreat this year? I think it would be so much fun! I don?t have plans to attend, but the thought has certainly crossed my mind and I?ve checked airfare a few times for sure.

Have you ever met any blog/online friends?? I?ve made online friendships both here and through a few different message boards over the years. I?ve been fortunate to meet a few of my online buddies and as luck would have it, they?ve all been just as fantastic in real life as in computer life!

Say Anything ND House Tax Committee To Hear Bill Reducing The ...

There are a ton of tax proposals being considered by the North Dakota legislature this session. From property taxes to the income tax, there are a lot of ideas floating around about how to give taxpayers at least some of their money back out of the windfall in revenues the state government is enjoying.

Today the House Finance and Tax committee will hear one of the simplest proposals. HB1394, introduced by Rep. Rick Becker, would simply change the state?s sales tax rate from 5% to 4%.

Just to give you an idea of where we?re at with the sales tax, according to the latest numbers from the Office of Management and Budget (see below), in the month of December sales tax revenues exceeded forecasts by 88%, or about $44.7 million. In the current biennium to date, sales tax revenues have exceeded legislative forecasts by 59%, or $615.4 million.

If we?d had a 4% state sales tax rate instead of a 5% sales tax rate, and if we assumed that the lower tax rate didn?t inspire more commerce (lowering the tax rate is obviously going to encourage additional sales) biennium to date we?d probably have exceeded our sales tax projection by only $283.78 million.

That would mean, if we had reduced the sales tax for this biennium, we still would have received every single dollar the state projected and budgeted for but roughly a quarter-billion dollars or so more.

I think this is definitely a tax we could reduce, saving everyone in the state who buys things a significant amount of money. Here?s the contact list for the House Finance and Tax Committee. It might be worth letting them know what you think.

Consumer alert: new health care markets on the way

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Buying your own health insurance will never be the same.

This fall, new insurance markets called exchanges will open in each state, marking the long-awaited and much-debated debut of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

The goal is quality coverage for millions of uninsured people in the United States. What the reality will look like is anybody's guess ? from bureaucracy, confusion and indifference to seamless service and satisfied customers.

Exchanges will offer individuals and their families a choice of private health plans resembling what workers at major companies already get. The government will help many middle-class households pay their premiums, while low-income people will be referred to safety-net programs they might qualify for.

Most people will go online to pick a plan when open enrollment starts Oct. 1. Counselors will be available at call centers and in local communities, too. Some areas will get a storefront operation or kiosks at the mall. Translation to Spanish and other languages spoken by immigrants will be provided.

When you pick a plan, you'll no longer have to worry about getting turned down or charged more because of a medical problem. If you're a woman, you can't be charged a higher premium because of gender. Middle-aged people and those nearing retirement will get a price break: They can't be charged more than three times what younger customers pay, compared with six times or seven times today.

If all this sounds too good to be true, remember that nothing in life is free and change isn't easy.

Starting Jan. 1, 2014, when coverage takes effect in the exchanges, virtually everyone in the country will be required by law to have health insurance or face fines. The mandate is meant to get everybody paying into the insurance pool.

Obama's law is called the Affordable Care Act, but some people in the new markets might experience sticker shock over their premiums. Smokers will face a financial penalty. Younger, well-to-do people who haven't seen the need for health insurance may not be eligible for income-based assistance with their premiums.

Many people, even if they get government help, will find that health insurance still doesn't come cheaply. Monthly premiums will be less than the mortgage or rent, but maybe more than a car loan. The coverage, however, will be more robust than most individual plans currently sold.

Consider a hypothetical family of four making $60,000 and headed by a 40-year-old. They'll be eligible for a government tax credit of $7,193 toward their annual premium of $12,130. But they'd still have to pay $4,937, about 8 percent of their income, or about $410 a month.

A lower-income family would get a better deal from the government's sliding-scale subsidies.

Consider a similar four-person family making $35,000. They'd get a $10,742 tax credit toward the $12,130 annual premium. They'd have to pay $1,388, about 4 percent of their income, or about $115 a month.

The figures come from the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation's online Health Reform Subsidy Calculator. But while the government assistance is called a tax credit and computed through the income tax system, the money doesn't come to you in a refund. It goes directly to insurers.

Obama's law is the biggest thing that's happened to health care since Medicare and Medicaid in the 1960s. But with open enrollment for exchange plans less than 10 months away, there's a dearth of consumer information. It's as if the consumer angle got drowned out by the political world's dispute over "Obamacare," the dismissive label coined by Republican foes.

Yet exchanges are coming to every state, even those led by staunch GOP opponents of the overhaul, such as Govs. Rick Perry of Texas and Nikki Haley of South Carolina. In their states and close to 20 others that are objecting, the exchanges will be operated by the federal government, over state opposition. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has pledged that every citizen will have access to an exchange come next Jan. 1, and few doubt her word.

But what's starting to dawn on Obama administration officials, activists, and important players in the health care industry is that the lack of consumer involvement, unless reversed, could turn the big health care launch into a dud. What if Obama cut the ribbon and nobody cared?

"The people who stand to benefit the most are the least aware of the changes that are coming," said Rachel Klein, executive director of Enroll America, a nonprofit that's trying to generate consumer enthusiasm.

"My biggest fear is that we get to Oct. 1 and people haven't heard there is help coming, and they won't benefit from it as soon as they can," she added. "I think it is a realistic fear."

Even the term "exchange" could be a stumbling block. It was invented by policy nerds. Although the law calls them "American Health Benefit Exchanges," Sebelius is starting to use the term "marketplaces" instead.

Polls underscore the concerns. A national survey last October found that only 37 percent of the uninsured said they would personally be better off because of the health care law. Twenty-three percent said they would be worse off in the Kaiser poll, while 31 percent said it would make no difference to them.

Insurers, hospitals, drug companies and other businesses that stand to benefit from the hundreds of billions of dollars the government will pump in to subsidize coverage aren't waiting for Washington to educate the public.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans, for example, are trying to carve out a new role for themselves as explainers of the exchanges. Somewhere around 12 million people now purchase coverage individually, but the size of the market could double or triple with the new approach, and taxpayers will underwrite it.

"Consumers are expecting their health insurance provider to be a helpful navigator to them," said Maureen Sullivan, a senior vice president for the Blues' national association. "We see 2013 as a huge year for education."

One goal is to help consumers master the "metals," the four levels of coverage that will be available through exchange plans ? bronze, silver, gold, and platinum.

Blue Cross is also working with tax preparer H&R Block, which is offering its customers a health insurance checkup at no additional charge this tax season. Returns filed this year for 2012 will be used by the government to help determine premium subsidies for 2014.

"This tax season is one of historical significance," said Meg Sutton, senior advisor for tax and health care at H&R Block. "The tax return you are filing is going to be key to determining your health care benefits on the exchange."

Only one state, Massachusetts, now has an exchange resembling what the administration wants to see around the country. With six years in business, the Health Connector enrolls about 240,000 Massachusetts residents. It was created under the health overhaul plan passed by former Republican Gov. Mitt Romney and has gotten generally positive reviews.

Connector customer Robert Schultz is a Boston area startup business consultant who got his MBA in 2008, when the economy was tanking. Yet he was able to find coverage when he graduated and hang on to his insurance through job changes since. Schultz says that's freed him to pursue his ambition of becoming a successful entrepreneur ? a job creator instead of an employee.

"It's being portrayed by opponents as being socialistic," Schultz said.. "It is only socialistic in the sense of making sure that everybody in society is covered, because the cost of making sure everybody is covered in advance is much less than the cost of putting out fires."

The Connector's executive director, Glen Shor, said his state has proven the concept works and he's confident other states can succeed on their own terms.

"There is no backing away from all the challenges associated with expanding coverage," Shor said. "We are proud in Massachusetts that we overcame what had been years of policy paralysis."

Oil rises above $96 ahead of US data

(AP) ? The price of oil rose slightly Monday, a sign of investor confidence in the U.S. economy's recovery ahead of the release of data on jobs, home sales and the country's overall growth.

Benchmark oil for March delivery was up 14 cents to $96.02 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 7 cents to close at $95.88 on the Nymex on Friday after a report showed a cooling off in new U.S. home sales.

The U.S. government will release monthly durable goods figures later Monday, and the National Association of Realtors will report on pending home sales for December. Later in the week, reports on weekly jobless claims and employment data for January are due.

Analysts expect to see continuing signs of a sluggish recovery, even amid lowered expectations for fourth-quarter economic growth for 2012, to be released by the U.S. Commerce Department on Wednesday.

"If 4Q growth comes in at the 1.5 percent we expect, it will have averaged 2 percent over the past four quarters ... Slow and steady is the name of the game," analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore said in a market commentary.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, fell 10 cents to $113.18 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 0.7 cent to $2.883 per gallon.

? Natural gas fell 5.3 cents at $3.391 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil rose 0.2 cent to $3.051 a gallon.

UFC On FOX 6 Results: Rampage Jackson Falls To Glover Teixeira (VIDEO/PHOTOS)

CHICAGO -- In possibly Rampage Jackson's last UFC fight, the former champion was visibly exhausted.

It also was easy to see that Glover Teixeira was well on his way to a unanimous decision Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd at the United Center.

Jackson, the 34-year-old former light heavyweight champion was taken down in all three rounds, but Teixeira (20-2) couldn't finish him. Jackson (32-11) got back to his feet every time. Late in the second round, Jackson tried to shrug off Teixeira's punches, but fatigue appeared to be setting in.

"I really wanted to win that fight," Jackson said. "I kind of wish I fought smart and didn't get hit so much, but I always said I would rather lose a good fight than win a boring one and the fans are telling me that was an exciting fight. So I guess I'm sad but not so sad. I fought like Rampage tonight."

The fight was scored 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

Jackson, who fought his last fight under his current UFC contract, has been critical of the UFC and how he perceives the organization treats its fighters. He insists the fight was his last in the UFC, but plans on continuing his MMA career.

"He just walked out right now and screamed, `You are going to miss me,'" White said. "I said, `I miss you already buddy.' ... Rampage's biggest problem is that he doesn't always train. He doesn't always stay in shape. If he took this sport 100 percent, hardcore, serious, God knows what that guy would be able to accomplish, but he doesn't."

Demetrious Johnson successfully defended his flyweight title in the main event, unanimously outpointing John Dodson.

Dodson, fighting at 125 pounds, landed left hands twice in the second round, sending Johnson to the ground. In the third round, Johnson had a takedown and landed a knee to get back in the fight. Johnson was warned after two illegal knees, a low blow in the first round and an illegal knee in the fourth round.

Johnson (17-2-1) started taking control late in fourth land, landing a series of knees to Dodson's head and a series of punches as Dodson (15-6) tired. It continued in the fifth and final round, as Dodson couldn't defend repeated knees to his head.

Johnson struggled in the first two rounds.

"I got dazed a little bit, but I am in good shape," Johnson said. "It is going to happen. You are going to get hit."

In a lightweight bout, Anthony Pettis (14-2) landed a left kick to Donald Cerrone's body and followed with a left jab in the second round, knocking Cerrone (19-5) to the ground and winning his third straight fight.

"Shutting that guy up was the biggest thing for me," Pettis said. "Now I never need to hear about that guy again. He's done. He got beat in one round. Goodbye."

Pettis put himself in a position for the lightweight UFC title and asked the question to UFC President Dana White.

"I am not scared to fight anybody. I want the champ ASAP," Pettis said. "Dana White what do I have to do for this title fight?"

Pettis came off an 11-month layoff after shoulder surgery.

In another main card fight, 30-year-old Chicago native Ricardo Lamas (13-2) dropped a series of elbows and punches on 24-year-old Erik Koch (13-2) before the featherweight bout was stopped by referee John McCarthy. Lamas had Koch pinned to the ground and went to work on Koch's bloodied face.

Purported Relativity Paradox Resolved

Science is alive and well in at least the Physics community. Whilst I won't even pretend to understand General Relativity, the questioning of it and discussion about those questions is the true essence of science.

Sigh. General Relativity was not even at question here. Perhaps commenting on Slashdot should require a minimum amount of knowing what one is talking about. AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA. Sigh.

At any rate, electrical engineers tend to view parts of Special Relativity in isolation. That makes them easier to handle and "visualize" in some respects, but much harder to deal with interactions. Minkovsky vectors and tensors are what theoretical physicists use instead, grouping several codependent field parts into one entity that can then be transformed as a whole.

So the physicists will most likely just have employed a better mathematical toolbox for resolving the "paradox". I've not actually read the original Einstein papers, but I would not be much surprised if his equations were closer to what Electrical Engineers get to deal with than what Theoretical Physicists do. Shaking out all that tensor stuff is more or less elegant wrapup work.

That sort of approach was, however, at the core of General Relativity, and mastering it took quite a bit more time for Einstein. I seem to remember that he discussed the underpinnings with Hilbert, and Hilbert came up with the general equations independently within something like a week, but retracted his papers out of respect for Einstein doing all the visionary groundwork as well as shouldering the math (though being quite slower at it than well-versed mathematicians).

Editor's Letter: Winners and losers

In each issue of Distro, editor-in-chief Tim Stevens publishes a wrap-up of the week in news.

Editor's Letter Winding Down

Earnings season comes but four times a year -- give or take -- and it's upon us again. It's in these mid-season times that we look back on three month's worth of corporate performance and see whose executive strategies are up to snuff and whose, perhaps, need a little retooling.

In the former, happy list we can include Google, whose Q4 2012 earnings added up to $14.42 billion in revenues -- excluding Motorola Home, which would have added another $800 million to the tally. Total profit is a healthy $2.89 billion. We can also happily throw Netflix in the winners group, with its Q4 earnings showing 2 million new US subscribers (for a global total of 33 million) and $8 million profit on $945 million in revenue.

On the losing side we have AMD, which is struggling to keep up with the transition to a post-PC era. Revenues were $1.16 billion, down almost a third from the year before, and resulting in a net loss of $473 million. Logitech too gets added to the losing pile, with revenues down 14 percent to $615 million and a $195 million net loss.

And then we have Apple. The company posted record revenues of $54.5 billion, resulting in a record profit of $13.08 billion, mostly thanks to shuffling an amazing 47.8 million iPhones and 22.9 million iPads into the hands of customers. That all sounds incomprehensibly good, but Mac sales were down nearly a quarter, hurt due in large part to the rather late refresh of the iMac. All in all, Apple failed to live up to analyst expectations and its stock price has been taking a beating -- but that's liable to change by the time you read this.

But, the biggest loser of all is Atari, which filed for bankruptcy protection this week. The brand itself has been sold and re-sold many times since the '80s so it hardly packs the prestige it once did, but still it's sad to see the name struggling on and having to sell off the rights to games like Pong and Tempest to survive.

But enough of that financial stuff, let's talk gadgets.

But enough of that financial stuff, let's talk gadgets. Microsoft confirmed sales of the Surface Pro will begin on February 9th, with a starting price of $899. This is the x86 version of the Surface tablet running full Windows 8 and starting with 64GB of storage. But, given how much of that will likely be consumed by the OS itself, you'll probably want to spring for the $999 128GB model.

Sony's Xperia Tablet Z got official, a 10.1-inch, 1,920 x 1,200 device powered by a 1.5GHz, quad-core Qualcomm processor paired with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Despite being only 6.9mm thick, it still offers microSD expansion. It weighs only 495g, making it the thinnest and lightest 10-incher on the market. Or, at least, it will be when it actually hits the market, whenever that is.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata took to the internets to deliver an encouraging batch of news directly to fans, starting with a promised update to overall system speed of the Wii U, a welcome improvement to all those gamers who are short on patience -- which, really, is all of them. The Wii U social network, Miiverse, is also getting a big enhancement, allowing for the creation of more granular groups on there, while also allowing far broader access thanks to a browser interface that will launch this year. Nintendo is also promising that a mobile app will launch sometime this year, which means you can get your fix of obscene stylus drawings wherever you may be.

Finally, we got what may be our first hint at how the next-generation PlayStation home console is coming together, courtesy of a leaked developer document handed to Kotaku. The console is reportedly codenamed "Orbis" and will offer an eight-core CPU and R10XX GPU, both from AMD. If these specs pan out, that's an interesting development, as AMD also powers the Wii U and is rumored to be powering the next Xbox as well.

In this week's Distro, we're exploring the history of human-powered flight, from old-timey bits of bamboo and paper optimistically strapped onto the arms of a hopeful/foolish man, to the modern Sikorsky prize. Sarah Silbert reviews HP's Envy x2 convertible while Brad Molen reviews the $50 Pantech Discover smartphone. Joshua Fruhlinger remembers the early days of instant delivery in Modem World, Ross Rubin tells us why Lenovo's IdeaCentre Horizon is what Microsoft's PixelSense (née Surface) should have been and Adafruit's Limor Fried is gracious enough to sit down for Q&A. Now, thank you for being gracious enough to sit down and partake in this week's Distro. I hope you enjoy.

Positive Mindsets Make For Positive Relationships | Your Marriage ...

Positive Mindsets Make For Positive Relationships (Part 1 of a 3 part series)

?

This blog series will give a perspective as to how to develop a positive mindset, which in turn will help make your relationship a positive and happy one.

We all have voices in our heads. We have the logical voice and the emotional voice.? Often times the emotional voice is the negative one. When we have a negative thought or reaction we also have a physical sensation that accompanies it in our body; if we are upset our stomach may hurt.? For example ? Joe borrows Mary?s car and he get?s a scratch on it. Mary?s first response, might be; ?You idiot, why weren?t you more careful??? After Mary responds like that maybe her head starts to hurt from yelling at Joe; that response will probably not get a good reaction from Joe.

The negative thought combined with its accompanying feeling is a very powerful force inside of us and often dominates our thoughts, feelings and actions.? To effectively relate to this negative force we have to look for our logical voice.? This is not to say that we should ignore our feelings; however, our response should be driven by the voice that is most likely to take us to a place where we have a positive outcome.

In our example, for Mary to get? the best reaction from Joe, she has to stop and think, ?What do I want?? Mary is interested in getting Joe to get her car fixed and pay for the damage and she also doesn?t want to have lasting hard feelings as a result of the accident. In addition, she wants believe that Joe will be careful with her property. ?If Mary has a positive mindset she will get much better results, if not there could easily be an upsetting argument, which may hurt their relationship.

In my next blog, I will talk about two steps to use to get the voices in your head to help you to get a positive mindset.? In the last blog in this series, I will give you my six step process to get yourself to behave in a way that moves you toward the best solution possible.

UK court forces Barclays to reveal staff on Libor list

LONDON (Reuters) - A British judge forced Barclays to identify top executives alongside traders linked to a probe into rate fixing, naming ex CEOs Bob Diamond and John Varley and current Finance Director Chris Lucas on Thursday despite requests for anonymity.

The names were unveiled in a preliminary hearing for a case brought against Barclays by a residential care home operator which alleges it was mis-sold interest rate hedging products, which were based on Libor rates.

Barclays was the first bank to be punished over the Libor scandal, in which global lenders colluded to manipulate benchmark interest rates. It agreed to a fine of $453 million from U.S. and UK authorities and its then chief executive Bob Diamond left the bank following the controversy.

In the first British claim for damages, Guardian Care Homes is suing Barclays for 37 million pounds. It is seen as a test case for interest rate swaps misselling, and is also set to shine a light on people involved in the bank's manipulation of Libor and how the rate setting process was conducted.

Britain's High Court denied requests by 104 former and current Barclays staff for anonymity. The list of names includes 24 individuals who have been named in regulatory documents referring to Barclays' attempted Libor rigging. That sub list was not immediately available.

The remaining people are employees whose email accounts were disclosed to the regulatory authorities, but it is not suggested in the regulatory findings that they were implicated in the fixing scandal.

Those named include Rich Ricci, head of Barclays' investment bank.

"There is a legitimate public interest in the true picture in relation to the manipulation of Libor by banks generally, not just Barclays, being brought fully to light," the judge said in his ruling.

"In my judgment, fair and accurate media reporting of all aspects of Libor manipulation, including the involvement of employees and ex-employees of Barclays and their identity, is an important aspect of the public obtaining that true picture."

Others named on Thursday include Ryan Reich, a 30-year-old former Barclays swaps trader based in New York who was fired in 2010.

U.S. prosecutors are investigating Reich's activities while at Barclays between August 2006 and March 2010, according to several people familiar with the situation.

Ritankar "Ronti" Pal, who oversaw desk trading since 2006, was also on the list. He recently left Barclays.

Other names included Eric Bommensath, a French bond trader who became global head of fixed income and a member of the bank's executive committee, and Harry Harrison, a British banker in charge of dollar-denominated fixed-income trading in New York.

Libor is used as a benchmark for pricing trillions of dollars of loans and other financial contracts and banks implicated face a rising tide of civil lawsuits from customers who argue the rate-rigging pushed up the cost of their loans.

Switzerland's UBS agreed in December to pay fines of $1.5 billion and a slew of other banks, including Royal Bank of Scotland are also expected to reach settlements.

Barclays has said it has fired five employees following an internal investigation into how its Libor rates were submitted and disciplined another eight people. Many people identified in that investigation have also left the bank, it told lawmakers in November.

"This started as an alleged misselling case which the bank considers has no merit," Barclays said in a brief statement on Thursday. "The addition of a claim based on what happened with Libor does not change the bank's view.

"The fact that someone's documents were reviewed by the bank during its review of millions of documents does not mean that such person was involved in any wrongdoing."

Modifications of a nanoparticle can change chemical interactions with cell membranes

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Researchers at Syracuse University's Department of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering at L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science are studying the toxicity of commonly used nanoparticles, particles up to one million times smaller than a millimeter that could potentially penetrate and damage cell membranes.

In a recent article published along with cover art in the journal Langmuir, researchers Shikha Nangia, assistant professor of biomedical and chemical engineering (BMCE), and Radhakrishna Sureshkumar, Department Chair of BMCE and professor of physics, showed how simple shape and charge modifications of a nanoparticle can cause tremendous changes in the chemical interactions between the nanoparticle and a cell membrane.

Nanomaterials, which are currently being used as drug carriers, also pose a legitimate concern, since no universal standards exist to educate and fully protect those who handle these materials. Nanoparticles are comparable to chemicals in their potential threat because they could easily penetrate the skin or be inhaled.

"Nanotechnology has immense potential that is starting to be being realized; a comprehensive understanding of toxicity of nanoparticles will help develop better safe handling procedures in nanomanufacturing and nano-biotechnology" says Sureshkumar and Nangia, In addition, the toxicity levels of various nanoparticles can be used to our advantage in targeting cancer cells and absorbing radiation during cancer therapy. Nanotoxicity is becoming a major concern as the use of nanoparticles in imaging, therapeutics, diagnostics, catalysis, sensing and energy harvesting continues to grow dramatically.

This research project has taken place over the past year utilizing a state of the art 448 core parallel computer nicknamed "Prophet" housed in Syracuse University's Green Data Center. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation.

Langmuir is a notable, interdisciplinary journal of American Chemical Society publishing articles in: colloids, interfaces, biological interfaces, nano-materials, electrochemistry and devices and applications.

Owl monkeys who 'stay true' reproduce more than those with multiple partners

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Breaking up is hard to do -- and can be detrimental to one's reproductive fitness, according to a new University of Pennsylvania study.

Focusing on wide-eyed, nocturnal owl monkeys, considered a socially monogamous species, the research reveals that, when an owl monkey pair is severed by an intruding individual, the mate who takes up with a new partner produces fewer offspring than a monkey who sticks with its tried-and-true partner.

The findings underscore how monogamy and pair-bonds -- relatively rare social formations among mammals -- can benefit certain individuals, with potential implications for understanding how human relationship patterns may have evolved.

Eduardo Fernandez-Duque and Maren Huck report on the research in PLOS ONE. Fernandez-Duque is an associate professor in Penn's Department of Anthropology. Huck completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Fernandez-Duque's laboratory and is now a professor at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom.

Since 1997, Fernandez-Duque and colleagues have monitored an owl monkey population in a portion of Argentina's Chaco region. Their behavioral observations, demographic data and physiological sampling have provided a wealth of information on the animals.

"We have managed over the years to have quite significant sample sizes for a study of wild non-human primates," Fernandez-Duque said. "These findings are possible because we have intense demographic monitoring year-round that allows us to notice when a male is missing, when a female is missing or when there's a new adult in the group. We couple this with intense behavioral monitoring that allows us to document the details of fights or the whole process of mate replacement."

The current study amasses data from 16 years of observation of 18 owl monkey groups, a total of 154 animals. Owl monkeys live in monogamous groups consisting of an adult male, an adult female and their offspring. The juveniles disperse from the group around age 3 or 4.

In 2008, Fernandez-Duque and colleagues published a paper reporting, for the first time, the presence of a so-called "floater" individual, which attacked the male member of an owl monkey pair and essentially replaced him as a mate and infant-care provider.

The Penn team now demonstrates that this usurping of mates by both male and female floaters is a common occurrence. The researchers documented 27 female and 23 male replacements in the groups they observed.

The replacements often involved dramatic fights, some of which ended fatally for the evicted individual.

"These are high-stakes competitions for reproductive positions," Fernandez-Duque said.

By following pairs and observing replacements, Fernandez-Duque and Huck show that having a partner evicted harms the reproductive success of the remaining mate. Owl monkeys with one partner produced 25 percent more offspring per decade than those with two or more partners.

"What we're showing is that if you manage to stay with the same partner you produce more infants than if you're forced to change partners," Fernandez-Duque said.

The reason for this significant impact on the reproductive success of the remaining partner is not yet completely clear, but the researchers surmise that it may have to do with a delay in reproduction due to the fact that female owl monkeys in Argentina typically only conceive between March and May. It's also possible the delay occurs because the two individuals take time to assess one another before reproducing, given the significant commitment to infant care that both males and females make.

The results demonstrate that, for owl monkeys, long-term monogamy and pair-bonding improves reproductive fitness. The finding helps explain previous research by Fernandez-Duque's group, which has shown that male owl monkeys invest significantly in raising their offspring.

"Monogamy makes sense for these primates, because the male who sticks to a female is certain about the paternity of the young, and so he invests in their care," he said. "The female benefits from shared provisioning of care which may help her reduce the burden of pregnancy and lactation."

Fernandez-Duque's studies of owl monkeys in Argentina and his collaborative research on monogamous titi and saki monkeys of Ecuador are helping scientists understand the ecological and biological factors that gave rise to pair-bonds in non-human primates and in humans.

"There's some consensus among anthropologists that pairs-bonds must have played an important role in the origin of human societies," Fernandez-Duque said. "Call it love, call it friendship, call it marriage, there is something in our biology that leads to this enduring, emotional bond between two individuals that is widespread among human societies."

The research was supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the L.S.B. Leakey Foundation, the National Geographic Society, the National Science Foundation, the University of Pennsylvania Research Foundation, the Zoological Society of San Diego and the German Science Foundation.
