China records largest trade deficit since 1990

China has recorded its largest trade deficit since 1990, and economists believe seasonal factors might be the reason behind this one-off case.

China's imports rushed forward by 40%, but exports grew at half the rate of imports.

This has caused a trade deficit worth 31.5 billion dollars in February, the largest since 1990.

Experts have ascribed the trade deficit to seasonal factors in February, and termed it as an individual case.

Economists have also forecasted that imports will moderate in the months ahead, as China's economic growth slows down.

They also said this depressing position will probably lead to a 'slower pace of gains in the Chinese currency and the easing of government policy'.

According to the General Administration of Customs, China's imports rose 39.6 percent from a year earlier, after a 15.3 percent slouch in January, and exports grew 18.4 percent year-on-year, with drop of 0.5 percent

In his government work report on Monday, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao reduced the economic estimate for this year to 7.5 percent, claiming China's priorities this year are to steady the economic growth and expand it's domestic consumption.

Jiabao also said China's foreign trade this year is likely to grow by 10 percent.

"Outlook is not positive," The China Daily quoted Wang Tao, an economist with UBS AG, as saying.

Apple's iPhone Tops in Japan for the First Time

The research firm reported Thursday that Apple's iPhone shipments accounted for 26.6 percent of all cell phone shipments (including both smartphones and feature phones) in Japan from October through December, according to Kyodo News.

Fujitsu, having acquired Toshiba's cell phone business, came in second for the quarter with an 18.3 percent share of unit shipments, while Sharp was third with 15.7 percent of the market, IDC Japan reported.

It was a big quarter for handsets in the Japanese market, particularly for smartphones like the iPhone. Cell phone makers shipped 10.65 million units in the three-month period, up 15.2 percent from the fourth quarter of 2010, with smartphones making up 64.7 percent of those shipments.

Fujitsu Ltd., which took over the mobile phone operations of Toshiba Corp., was second with an 18.3 percent share and Sharp Corp. ranked third with 15.7 percent.

For the entire year, those rankings were flipped. Sharp owned 20.1 percent of the Japanese handset market in 2011, Fujitsu-Toshiba was second with 18.8 percent, and Apple was third with 14.2 percent.

Total shipments in Japan surged 15.2 percent from a year earlier to 10.65 million units, of which smartphones accounted for 64.7 percent. Handset shipments grew 5 percent for the year as a whole, with 37.96 million units shipped in Japan in 2011, the research firm said.

Meanwhile, Apple's foray in another Asian market got off to a rousing start this week. Leading Chinese carrier China Telecom began taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4S on Thursday and had already taken 200,000 within the first few hours of the offer going live, according to M.I.C. Gadget. China Telecom's plan was announced in March.

China Telecom will sell the iPhone 4S at its 2,850 retail outlets around the country and it will also be made available at electronics retail outlets.

MGK, Dev, More Added To 2012 mtvU Woodie Awards Festival

After roughly 156 announcements (but who's counting?), mtvU has unveiled the full and final list of performers for the 2012 Woodie Awards Festival ... with a few last-minute additions, of course.

Dev, MGK, Of Verona and Imagine Dragons will join already-announced acts like fun., A$AP Rocky, Kimbra and Chiddy Bang at the inaugural Woodies Fest, set for March 15 in Austin, Texas, during the South by Southwest music festival.

The Woodies Fest kicks off at 1 p.m. CT at Red River and East 1st Street in Austin and is open to both SXSW badge-holders and uncredentialed (but certainly no less valid) music fans alike ... though, if you can't make it down to Austin, don't fret: The Woodies Fest will also stream live on Woodies.mtvU.com and leads up to the 2012 Woodie Awards themselves. On Sunday, March 18, the best moments from the Woodies will be featured in a 30-minute special, airing on MTV and mtvU at 8 p.m. ET.

Voting is now under way in all Woodie categories — including Woodie of the Year and the coveted Best Video Woodie — and will remain open until March 9. Voting in the Breaking Woodie category will continue during the live show on March 15. Fans can cast ballots in all categories through the Woodies' website or on their mobile phones at M.MTV.com or by texting VOTE to 66333. Standard message and data rates may apply.

IIF sees 1 trillion euro fallout from Greek default

LONDON (Reuters) - A disorderly default in Greece would probably leave Italy and Spain needing outside help to stop risks spreading, and cause more than 1 trillion euros ($1.3 trillion) damage to the euro zone, the Institute of International Finance said.

"There are some very important and damaging ramifications that would result from a disorderly default on Greek government debt," the IIF said in a document obtained by Reuters.

"It is difficult to add all these contingent liabilities up with any degree of precision, although it is hard to see how they would not exceed 1 trillion euros."

The document, obtained from a market source, was dated February 18 and marked "IIF Staff Note: Confidential."

The IIF wants bondholders to sign up by a Thursday deadline for a bond swap deal aimed at saving Greece more than 100 billion euros and putting the country on a more stable footing.

If it fails to win support, the ECB would likely suffer substantial losses, the document said, estimating the central bank's exposure to Greece of 177 billion euros was over 200 percent of its capital base.

Both Ireland and Portugal would need more outside help to insulate them from Greece, which could cost 380 billion euros over five years, the IIF estimated.

A disorderly Greek default would also probably require "substantial support to Spain and Italy to stem contagion there," which could cost another 350 billion euros, it said.

The IIF, which helped negotiate the bond swap deal on behalf of creditors, said there would be more massive bank recapitalization costs, which could easily hit 160 billion euros.
